Low Emission Polymer Resins for Composite Materials - Cleaner polymer resins for composite manufacturers
Final Decision Maker: Composite products manufacturers

Drexel University and the US Army seek to commercialize through patent licensing three technologies for reducing VOCs and HAPs in polymer resins.

Background and Technology:
Styrene is a solvent in the manufacture of plastics and composites and is also classified as a hazardous air pollutant (HAP) and volatile organic compound (VOC). Although the composites industry consumes only 9% of the world's styrene, it accounts for 79% of styrene emissions, largely due to its use as a diluent in resins for molding, shaping, extruding, etc. To address this problem, Drexel University and the Army Research Laboratory have developed and patented 3 technologies that enable the manufacture of resins for composites and for resin repairs that reduce the use of styrene and consequent VOC and HAP emissions. The first technology employs fatty acid monomers as a substitute for styrene in composite resins like vinyl ester, without compromising key performance characteristics. The second technology substitutes fatty acid monomers for styrene in unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester repair resins, while maintaining repair performance. The third technology enables reduction of styrene content in vinyl ester resins while increasing fracture toughness by combining vinyl ester monomers of different molecular weights. These technologies have been reduced to practice and tested at the Army Research Laboratory.

Benefits:
Clean: reduces VOCs/HAPs up to 70% compared to commercial resins
Comparable: performance properties similar to or better than commercial resins
Appropriate: for use in various manufacturing processes, including VARTM, SCRIMP, SMC.
Economical: production costs based on these resins are similar to present commercial technologies
Green: two of the three technologies are based on fatty acid monomers derived from plantsStatus and opportunity:
Available for license and commercialization: One issued US patent (7,449,525), one published US patent (2005/0250923), two unpublished US patents, and one PCT (US2005/016005)
Numerous peer-reviewed articles and an extensive Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) report available
Potential for R&D collaboration with Army researchers

Inventor(s) Commentary:
The development of fatty acid monomers has allowed for the reduction of styrene HAP content in composite resins from ~45 wt% to 20-25 wt%. These resins are currently being demonstrated/validated for DoD use in composite replacement parts for Army tactical vehicles, including HMMWV hoods, Marines HMMWV helmet hardtop, an Air Force T-38 dorsal cover, and an MCM composite rudder for the Navy. Lastly, composite repair resins used for automotive and other repair applications have been developed.
