Digital Radio Device for Measuring Distance for Child Tracking (ID 45532)
- Accurate Distance Measuring Device for Child Tracking Systems
Final Decision Maker: Parents, Amusement Parks
Introducing the Range Trainer, a small and inexpensive radio device for measuring distance that can be used for child tracking. This technology can be used to pinpoint where a child is to within a foot, even in a crowded venue. Distance measurement using analog signals is well known. The patent pending method of the Range Trainer uses mathematical correlation of a digitally coded signal. Analog systems require excessive radio frequency (RF) bandwidth. This poses two problems: high-speed electronic devices draw excessive power, and electromagnetic compliance is difficult. Analog systems are also limited by a very short range. Range Trainer is an inexpensive solution compared to current tracking systems largely because of its lower power requirements. All components are readily available, compact, and low-cost commercial technologies. The digital coding of the Range Trainer is similar to GPS, but unlike GPS which uses satellites that are 12,000 miles away, the Range Trainer is a very low power solution. The device is also programmed to enter sleep-mode, further reducing power consumption. As a result, Range Trainer has an expected battery life of months! The Range Trainer has shown the capability to measure accurately to within plus or minus 1 foot, within a range of up to 1000 ft. Optimized math routines compare the two waveforms and extract the relative distance between any two transponders. This design uses a frequency range compliant with FCC regulations. The digital coding technique enables this device to work in the presence of trees, buildings, and general obstructions to line of sight operation. One possible application could be in a theme park or other crowded venue. Children would be given a wrist band to be tracked by the park. In the event a child is separated from a parent, their location can be pinpointed to within a couple feet. An emergency button on the child's wrist band would alert the parent if pushed. The wrist bands would be serialized and individually assigned to guests.
