Ceramic Bone (10028) - Improved regeneration ceramic scaffold for dental bone grafting patients
Final Decision Maker: Dental bone grafting patients

Ceramic Bone's patent pending technology has the potential to replace current dental bone graft methods with a safe bioactive and bioresorbable ceramic scaffold. There is currently no synthetic scaffold material that is bioactive, resorbable and exhibits biologically-compatible, compressive strength. Ceramic Bone is a synthetic, virus-free, prion-free glass ceramic material which eliminates the risk of transmitted diseases or immunological reactions. Ceramic scaffold provides a framework for vascularization and regeneration of bone tissue.  Ceramic Bone allows for 100% risk reduction in getting a virus from the material.

Instead of using bone from your own body or an external source, from a bone bank or bovine source, your doctor will use this synthetic material to rebuild the bone in your body. The material slowly dissolves into the body while bone is grown into the structure of the material.

Currently there are numerous biomaterials for bone grafts in oral and maxillofacial surgery. They include autografts, allografts, xenografts and a wide variety of synthetic materials. Autografts are often referred to as the "gold standard"; bone is usually harvested from a donor site such as the iliac crest.  Autogenous bone possesses all the characteristics necessary for producing new bone; it is osteogenic (contributes to bone growth and repair), osteoconductive (serves as scaffold for new bone growth) and osteoinductive (triggers formation of new cells that are responsible for bone growth, helps with faster integration of graft).  Success rates are high but one obvious drawback of the autograft is the associated morbidity, including the possibility of recurrent pain, risk of infection, cost of a second surgery and the fact that autogenous bone is not always available in sufficient quantity or acceptable quality.  This is true, for example, with patients that suffer from osteoporosis.

The inventor of Ceramic Bone has over 20 years of experience, two patents and is a Professor of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry at OSU.
