Monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2) levels is becoming extremely important in the effort to combat global warming. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently declared CO2 a health hazard and has decided that CO2 emissions should be regulated. The first step in controlling or reducing CO2 emissions is to measure their current levels from engine exhaust. The patent pending Sturdy Sensor is ideally suited for such a role. Sturdy Sensor is a fast and reliable CO2 sensor that is impervious to humid environments and high temperatures. Sturdy Sensor's solid state construction means it has no moving parts, and therefore is essentially maintenance-free over long periods of time. Its low cost makes it ideal for situations where large numbers of sensors are required. Furthermore, Sturdy Sensor's construction allows for easy miniaturization, making it adaptable to a wide number of situations, including engine manufacturing environments for test monitoring applications or on-board sensors for real-time monitoring of an engine's exhaust. Sturdy Sensor can operate in temperatures from 752° -- 1,292° Farenheit. There is nothing currently on the market that can match Sturdy Sensor's reliability and accuracy in hot and humid conditions. Sturdy Sensor uses a lithium phosphate electrode with a coating of barium carbonate to neutralize the effects of humidity on the sensor. The combination of the two gives Sturdy Sensor its ability to detect CO2 across a wide range of temperatures without interference from humidity. The performance of the sensor has been verified in a laboratory setting, and an outside firm is currently fabricating a prototype. The inventor of the technology is a renowned sensor expert from The Ohio State University, whose research team has earned a spot in R&D Magazine's prestigious "R&D 100" list three times.
