LGX High Temperature Wireless Sensor
- high temperature sensor for engines
Final Decision Maker: Turbine engine testers
The technology proposed solves the problem in turbine testing of obtaining data from moving, high temperature engine parts. The current system for doing this for aircraft engines takes 3 people 2 weeks to wire at a cost of >$30,000 and lasts only hours before the sensors and wires fail. Our system is a high temperature, robust, wireless sensor, proven in lab testing to last over 8 months without degrading. (This test was only stopped due to the oven being required on another project.). Our sensors are mounted in several hours. Every sensor in our array can be monitored discreetly as opposed to some systems which average inputs of multiple sensors. Data from multiple variables are transmitted and processed by a single system. The system uses Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology combined with a Langasite crystal. This sensor is known as "LGX", and was developed at the University of Maine Orono's Laboratory for Surface Science & Technology (LASST). By varying the crystal structure relative to the SAW piezoelectric transmitter and receiver set, temperature, pressure strain or vibration may be monitored in the harshest of environments, up to 1000 degrees centigrade (1832 F). This has never been done in a long term application before this sensor was invented. The battery-free wireless communication system and the high strength, stress tolerant bonding technology (patent pending) under development in conjunction with the high temperature endurance of this sensor introduces opportunities across a broad range of applications beyond engine testing, such as new practices in Condition Based Maintenance for aviation turbines and major industrial systems.
