Intensive studies have been carried out in the last two decades on the effects of vanadium and how it could be used in place of insulin. In vitro, vanadium salts mimic most of the effects of insulin on the main target tissues of the hormone, and in vivo they induce normal blood sugar levels, and improved glucose homeostasis in insulin-deficient and insulin-resistant diabetic rodents.

Novel Vanadium Complexes of Monohydroxamates is such a product for the treatment of type II diabetes. Vanadium salts mimic the metabolic effects of insulin through alternative insulin-independent machinery. As such vanadium therapy could make a useful, attractive and complementary approach to insulin therapy seeing that vanadium salts are less toxic and certain manipulation can be made to carry on vanadium therapy. This treatment has already shown promise in animal models and has one issued patent. 

Vanadium has been shown to improve sensitivity to insulin in both Type I and Type 2 diabetes. It has been shown in human studies to have some ability to lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

More than 10 million Americans have diabetes mellitus, and close to a million new cases are diagnosed each year. More than 90% of these cases are of Type 2 diabetes. Dietary changes are essential to control diabetic symptoms and to avoid the many secondary complications, such as atherosclerosis, cataracts, hypertension, and renal failure.
