Introducing the Free Exotic Antenna (FEA), a new technology that enables powerful miniature antennas to be etched into circuit boards for use in such devices as cell phones and WiFi equipment.  Every handheld communication device such as a cell phone has a miniature antenna built-in to transmit and receive communication signals.  Most antennas are built using expensive components or complicated process steps beyond common manufacturing processes but the FEA does not require either.  As a result, FEA technology results in essentially no unit production cost.  The principal benefit of this technology is to provide a miniaturized, high-gain, and nearly zero-cost antenna for high volume production devices.

An example of what the FEA technology does is to make a miniature antenna 'behave' like a much larger antenna (up to ten times as large), both receiving and transmitting with more power.

The Free Exotic Antenna for cell phones and WiFi is a patented technology from The Ohio State University that gives antennas the size and performance benefits of exotic metamaterial devices with no new components or process steps.  Metamaterials are fabricated composite materials that can provide breakthrough advantages for high-performance antennas, filters, and other radio frequency (RF) circuits.  However, they are difficult to design and fabricate, are only available from limited suppliers, and require special treatment during product design and manufacturing.  FEA offers the same performance characteristics of metamaterials without the associated drawbacks.

Even better, this new antenna has practically no direct manufacturing cost at all.  FEA technology lets you build an exotic metamaterial-performance antenna right into the circuit board using current manufacturing processes.  During the product design phase, the requirements for the antenna are used to develop the Free Exotic Antenna design to be implemented as tiny transmission line patterns (microstrip or stripline).  This becomes a part of the printed circuit board design to be cranked out in volume.
