The Multi Axis Nanometrology Probe (07057-010) - high resolution three dimensional microscope for nanometrology
Final Decision Maker: Research laboratories

As devices and components continue to shrink in size across all fields of study, accurately measuring these objects is becoming more and more of a challenge. The science of measuring these objects at the nanoscale (around a billionth of a meter!) is called nanometrology. Unfortunately, current nanometrology techniques are not accurate enough to enable the next generation of manufacturing that will employ these nanoscale materials and technologies.

Nothing is currently on the market that offers adequate nanoscale accuracy and resolution. One problem with current systems is that they use a measurement probe with a fixed orientation. This is fine when measuring flat (or nearly-flat) samples as the probe is always nearly perpendicular to the sample. However, when scanning three-dimensional features, the tip of the probe may not be perpendicular to the sample, which results in inaccurate measurements. Other groups have developed systems to account for these non-perpendicular forces, but the orientation of the probe remains fixed.

To overcome the limitations of existing nanometrology systems, researchers at The Ohio State University have developed a novel multi-axis probe called the Multi Axis Nanometrology Probe that will enable the ultra-high accuracy measurement of arbitrarily complex 3D surfaces. The probe enables fast and precise control of probe orientation and multi-axis control of the forces between the probe and the sample, which ensures excellent measurements regardless of the complexity of the sample. This innovation serves to remove the single greatest barrier in the extreme miniaturization of electrical and mechanical devices, the ability to measure at high resolution in three dimensions. With this advancement, researchers and manufacturers can finally create functional 3D devices at nanometer scales.

The probe has been manufactured for testing in a laboratory setting, and preliminary data has been generated that proves the probe's effectiveness in imaging very challenging three-dimensional surface features.

The principal inventor is a professor of mechanical engineering at The Ohio State University and was recognized for his contributions in the field of mechanical engineering, specifically for his work on coordinate metrology, ultra-precision motion control, and instrumentation for imaging and manipulation of microstructures.
