BAKBlock Cancer Therapeutic (05037) - Veterinary
- Apoptosis inducing cancer therapeutic for treating cancer in animals
Final Decision Maker: Owners of pets with cancer
BAKBlock prevents out of control cancer cell growth, prevents cancer from spreading to new sites, and can restore the effectiveness of other cancer drugs. In the presence of BAKBlock, the cells die when they are told to. Cancer cells grow faster and live longer than normal cells, sometimes because they resist (or don't "hear") normal signals to die. Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is a normal part of the regulatory control of all cells, but it does not function properly in cancer cells so they don't die when they should. BAKBlock restores the proper response in the cancer cells. How? BAKBlock works by binding to a protein in the cell that prevents programmed cell death. When BAKBlock is added, the inhibitor is stopped, and the tumor cells commit suicide. Cancer in animals is currently treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and targeted therapy directed specifically toward the tumor cells. BAKBlock is a new kind of targeted therapy. The patent application described that BAKBlock was tested on nude mice with PC3 prostate cancers. The mice were given the BAKBlock orally for 63 days (dosage according to body weight). Results showed that tumor growth was reduced by up to 61%, with no toxicity. BAKBlock is a small molecule that can be made by synthetic chemistry. Thus it will be cheaper than larger more complex drugs like monoclonal antibodies. The lead inventor is a professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University. He has published over 160 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals. He has a successful history of developing small molecules, some which have been licensed to drug development companies for cancer treatment. The National Institute of Health has funded his work.
