The Perspective Controller system allows a user to navigate the virtual world of surveillance and sensor devices in a way that prevents user confusion and enhances the control ability of the user. This would be a very useful function for military applications. For example, cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), air traffic control towers, and satellite information could be overlaid and analyzed in a single system and controller. The commander at the military base who wants to understand the conditions in the area would physically pull back the controller arm to view the entire scene on the computer screen from the perspective of the satellite. If he notices an incoming airplane that he knows is blocked from the view of the UAV and the control tower, he could move the controller arm toward the direction of the incoming airplane and navigate around so the camera on board the satellite is facing the incoming plane. Then he could zoom-in on the unidentified aircraft and determine whether it is a friend or foe. This system allows the operator to manage multiple inputs of a real-time surveillance and information gathering system. Through the use of advanced human-computer interaction, the Perspective Controller gives the operator the ability to understand what is going on by fixing the view that the camera is showing with the current position of the controller. When a user examines an object through the controller and the visual interface, they have physical knowledge of how the device is positioned relative to the position and view of the camera. This enables a biofeedback that is not available on any other controller and gives the operator knowledge that cannot be afforded on any other platform. This system is more biocompatible than joystick and keyboard navigation systems because the input and output of the system are physically linked. Keyboard, joystick, and motion controllers do not provide a 1:1 view of what is happening on the screen, which can create confusion in the user for their understanding and control of the remote device. Lab results performed by the inventor have shown that people understand the virtual environment shown through the Perspective Controller faster and more accurately than using traditional methods of navigation. This "enhanced sensitivity" allows for better performance in the virtual environment.
