The Multiaxis Atomic Force Microscope Probe (07057) for 3D imaging - high resolution atomic force microscope probe for function 3D imaging
Final Decision Maker: Research laboratories

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is one of the most widely used tools for imaging and manipulating matter at extremely small scales. Unfortunately, the current AFM probes used to scan the matter are limited in that only relatively flat (two-dimensional) samples can be imaged at any useful resolution. Complex three-dimensional samples are either imaged at a greatly reduced resolution or cannot be imaged at all.

To overcome the limitations of existing AFM systems, researchers at The Ohio State University have developed a novel multi-axis probe that will enable the ultra-high resolution imaging of arbitrarily complex three-dimensional surfaces. The Multiaxis Atomic Force Microscope Probe enables fast and precise control of probe orientation and multi-axis control of the forces between the probe and the sample, which ensures an excellent image regardless of the complexity of the sample. This innovation serves to remove the single greatest barrier in the extreme miniaturization of electrical and mechanical devices, the ability to image at high resolution in three dimensions. With this advancement, researchers and manufacturers can finally create functional three-dimensional devices at nanometer scales. Furthermore, researchers will be able to analyze properties such as abrasion, adhesion, corrosion, friction, and lubrication with far greater accuracy than ever before.

The probe has been manufactured for testing in a laboratory setting, and preliminary data has been generated that proves the probe's effectiveness in imaging very challenging three-dimensional surface features. Precise control systems and algorithms are currently in development, which will lead to the development of a one-of-a-kind AFM system capable of coordinate metrology, imaging, and manipulation of three-dimensional objects at nanometer scales.

The inventor is a talented post-doctoral researcher and professor of mechanical engineering at OSU. The principal inventor was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). The AAAS and SME recognize him for his contributions in the field of mechanical engineering, specifically for his work on coordinate metrology, ultra-precision motion control, and instrumentation for imaging and manipulation of microstructures.
