Enzymes are proteins that increase the speed of chemical reactions and can be used for a wide variety of industrial applications, including the synthesis of ammonia.  Ammonia has uses as a household cleaner, fertilizer, and alternative fuel source.   Globally, more than 1% of manmade power is directed toward industrial production of ammonia.  The Efficient Enzyme System for Green Ammonia Production reduces these energy inputs for ammonia by relying on specially designed enzymes isolated from algae rather than bacteria.

Selenoproteins have the unique ability to dramatically increase the rate of chemical reactions when compared to similar enzymes produced only by bacteria. Some selenoproteins make common industrial and household chemical reactions proceed at a rate that is 400% faster than reactions catalyzed by bacteria produced enzymes. The Efficient Enzyme System for Green Ammonia Production makes commercially relevant quantities of a selenoprotein enzyme that creates at a cost that is 10% lower than traditional, bacteria-based systems.

Using single-celled green algae to manufacture the more efficient selenoprotein enzymes that generate ammonia, the Efficient Enzyme System for Green Ammonia Production makes it easier to produce selenoproteins in large-scale, industrial-sized amounts. More importantly, the Efficient Enzyme System for Green Ammonia Production harnesses the photosynthetic power of green algae to reduce energy inputs into the enzyme production process and allows manufacturers to cut enzyme production costs.
