Sensafect (05158) - Veterinary
- Earlier & more accurate test for detection of bacterial infections in animals
Final Decision Maker: Veterinarians
Sensafect Infection Surveillance Probe: For earlier and more accurate detection and monitoring of bacterial infections in animals. Bacteria have surprisingly sophisticated methods for communicating with other bacteria. In most species of bacteria, individual bacteria secrete molecules known as "quorum sensors" to signal their presence to other bacteria. Once a bacterium receives notice that its bacterial "allies" are nearby, the bacteria transform from fairly harmless individuals into a rapidly dividing infectious colony. While this strategy is often beneficial to the bacteria, it is experienced by animals as serious infection and harmful biofilm formation. Sensafect Infection Surveillance Probe allows veterinarians to use bacteria's communication system to detect, monitor, and defeat infections - even before the bacteria begin harmful colonization. The patent-pending Sensafect Infection Surveillance Probe is specially designed to recognize the most common bacterial quorum sensors. When it detects the presence of these bacterial molecules, the Sensafect Infection Surveillance Probe sends a fluorescent signal to the veterinary care provider to indicate the stage and severity of a bacterial infection.
The serious bacterial disease mastitis affects more than half of all US dairy cows and costs the dairy industry more than $180 per cow annually. Currently, mastitis is detected using tests that rely on the establishment and expansion of bacterial colonies in cow udders. Sensafect Infection Surveillance Probe could provide earlier detection of mastitis so that it can be treated before serious problems arise with the animal's health and milk production. The primary inventor of this technology is a former Fulbright Scholar (one of the most prestigious awards programs worldwide) and world-renowned expert in molecular biology and its application to the improvement of human health.
