SafeHome CO Sensor (09038)
- Quick warning carbon monoxide detector for homes
Final Decision Maker: Homeowners, Renters & Offices
15,000 Americans visit emergency rooms every year due to Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning, the leading cause of accidental poisonings in the United States. CO is odorless, tasteless, and can only be detected using a specialized sensor. For the first time ever a low-power, energy-saving Carbon Monoxide (CO) sensor has been developed that meets and exceeds the performance of expensive, high-power plug-in CO sensors. The sensor is easily miniaturizable, which saves space, and can be manufactured at low cost using established manufacturing techniques, resulting in a very affordable sensor that can be mass-deployed in homes and offices. The sensor is highly selective to CO in the presence of other gases, which insures reliable detection for added peace-of-mind. Unlike current battery-powered models, this sensor enables the display of precise CO concentrations so that the end user knows exactly how much CO is in the environment. The battery-powered CO sensors currently available are not highly selective to CO in the presence of other gases, suffer from slow response times, and lack a display to show precise CO concentration. Current plug-in sensors, which overcome some of these drawbacks, use significant energy to heat the sensor, are less reliable, and are far more expensive to buy and operate. The SafeHome CO sensor is reliable, accurate, affordable, and so efficient that it can run off of battery power while offering all the benefits of plug-in sensors. The low cost of the device allows homeowners to install one in every room of the house. The sensor material can be easily integrated with electronic circuitry and CO concentrations are easily derived by measuring the electrical resistance when a current (or voltage) is applied to the sensor. The sensor was developed by a leading Ohio State University professor of chemistry and has been fabricated and tested in a university laboratory setting. A scientific paper will soon be published detailing the experiments. The inventor is a renowned expert in sensor technologies, and his research has earned him a spot in R&D magazine's prestigious R&D 100 list 3 times. U.S. and foreign rights are available for this technology.
