Smart Grid Energy Storage Water Heater - Smart Grid Energy Storage Water Heater for Homes
Final Decision Maker: Existing and New Users of Electric Water Heaters

Introducing the Smart Grid Energy Storage (SGES) Water Heater, that saves the customer money and provides customer and/or the electric utility the ability to store green energy upon demand.

The SGES Water Heater is a smart grid appliance that minimizes the main deterrent to consumer acceptance and usage of utility demand side management programs for hot water heater control. This is customer inconvenience caused by the loss of hot water due to interruption of electric power.

Customers will be able to shift electrical power usage to times when electric utilities offer lower cost power, and benefit from utility demand side management programs such as: Time of Use Rate Plans, Monthly Rebates for Allowing Remote Control and Monitoring, Purchase Price Rebates, and Direct Green Power Delivery.

Utilities will want to use the smart grid control available on the SGES Water Heater to achieve: Green Power Energy Storage (Wind & Solar), Load Shifting, Improved Energy Efficiency, , Improved T&D Losses, Reduced Carbon Emissions with Carbon Offset Credits, Energy Trading Opportunities,  Enhanced Use of Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Ability to Improve Generation Regulation Down Margin, Potential for Return on Investment,  Ability to Offer New Demand Side Management Programs, and Ability to Offer True Green Power Delivery.

The SGES Water Heater is a dual tank water heater with a smart grid control controller that utilizes the same form-factor as a standard single tank water heater. The benefit is ease of homeowner adoption and replacement of existing water heater. The
E2S smart grid controller can provide data on aggregate sum of energy storage capacity to a utility in near real time.

Simulations show that the SGES dual tank water heater offers energy efficiency improvements of 4 to 9% and over five (5) times the controllable energy storage as a comparable standard electric 50 gallon water heater.

The SGES Water Heater has a 20-gallon upper tank that operates similar to a standard water heater, and a 50-gallon bottom tank that is smart grid controlled. The bottom tank feeds water to the top tank (i.e. connected in series). Hot water from the top tank feeds the customer's hot water supply line.

Inventor Commentary & Alternative Development Scenarios
Inventor(s) Sales Goals
Minimum Goal $100,000 Current GOAL $0.4 M
The Green Energy Storage Water Heater has a 20-gallon upper tank that is thermostically controlled and a larger 50-gal. bottom tank that can be controlled remotely by the utility.
Inventor(s) Commentary:
For the Smart Grid Energy Storage Water Heater to sell the local utility must offer a rebate or incentive to the potential customer. Electric utilities will need to promote the SGES water heater in a similar fashion that is presently done for controlling standard electric water heaters, air conditioning, pool pumps, etc.
