  The first 3 dimensional tilt switch that knows which way is up 100% of the time.  It is ideal for low cost commercial applications, like toys, kitchen appliances, heaters etc.  This 3-D tilt switch only uses four pins to allow lowest cost possible.  This 3-D tilt switch takes up half the space of traditional 2-D switches; saving you space and money.  This 3-D switch is placed flat on the board and not on its side which makes it cheaper and easier to manufacture the final product.
   This tilt switch uses a unique internal geometry that forces the output into 6 defined states indicating its orientation up, down, left- right, forward, and backward.  It is a mechanical solution that does not require complicated programming or expensive accelerometers.    It has a small pin count that keeps this switch small and lightweight so it can be integrated into most applications and can save space in applications where two 2-D switches are required.
  Prior to this innovation, it would require a combination of 2 separate 2-Dimensional tilt switches, including one that is mounted at a 90 degree angle from the planar surface of the printed circuit board, to accurately determine the objects oreintation.  A single 2-Dimensional tilt switch does not differentiate between right side up and upside down, which could mean the difference between an appliance catching fire or safe operation.  In the same four pins used for a 2-Dimensional switch, this 3-D switch will give the correct orientation of the product for all 3 axis.  
  This 3-D tilt switch will improve the safety of appliances.  For example, a heater will turn off automatically if it is knocked over.

I am an electrical engineer and design military products,toys, and consumer goods. This innovation was conceived during a product development cycle that required a 3-D tilt switch. I found multiple manufacturers of 2-D tilt switches. None of the 2-D tilt switches could differentiate between right side up or upside down. To solve this problem, I had to use 2 tilt switches for twice the cost and space and had to mount one on its side. This 3-D tilt switch solves all of these problems.
