This technology combines the strength of carbon nanotubes and the germ killing power of natural enzymes to produce long lasting films that keep surfaces sanitary. There has been growing concern about contaminated public surfaces spreading infections such as staph. Shared and public surfaces such as sports equipment, computers and hospital equipment can build up infectious levels of these dangerous microbes, putting the public health at risk. This analysis studies the market for shared exercise equipment. Typical germ killing products typically don't last, either because a temporary treatment is used (such as a cleaner) or the coating used rubs off over time. By combining carbon nanotubes with the killing agent, strength is added to the coating so that it remains on the surface. The active killing agent also is long lasting, and functions in a way so that it does not create resistant bacteria. Lab testing at Auburn University has demonstrated that these strong surfaces are capable of killing staph bacteria on contact. An ability to change the properties of the coating has also been shown. A variety of methods of production and application are envisioned, and research is ongoing. These novel coatings could also potentially be used with other compounds with desirable properties. US and PCT patents are pending. The lead inventors have extensive experience and success in both nanotechnology and enzyme chemistry.
