Responsive Polymer - More reliable fuel injection for car engines
Final Decision Maker: Automobile and auto parts manufacturers

This Responsive Polymer grows and shrinks in response to an electric current. While other responsive polymers (or EAPs) exist, the extremely low cost of this polymer opens up several new potential applications, including fuel injectors.

So often, it is the material that makes the product. The Responsive Polymer is strong enough to be used in harsh applications and inexpensive enough to be produced on a mass scale. Taken together, these suggest that the Responsive Polymer could significantly improve the performance and value of fuel injectors. It is quicker responding and more accurate than the current products on the market. This will allow for improved power and torque, which should lead to improved fuel efficiency and lower vehicle emissions. Both of these issues are becoming increasingly important and will provide car makers with an advantage over competitors when marketing products.

The Responsive Polymer has been tested within a lab setting. It has demonstrated much improved characteristics when compared to the current material used to produce fuel injectors. The manufacturing method is relatively simple compared to competing technologies. Production costs are so much lower that it opens up applications that are currently not feasible otherwise for this class of material, even beyond fuel injectors.  The lead inventor is a professor in Materials Engineering with over 10 years experience in the field of polymers.  A US non-provisional patent application is pending.
