 | Very, Very Cool This idea can change the world for many people. I'm going to immediately e-mail it to my daughter in Africa - to see if she can find connections.
In addition, I'm going to also e-mail it to some friends in the corporate world who might be able to help.
This is also the reason that the Planet Eureka! network exists Posted by: Doug Hall - Planet Eureka! Founder on 04/17/2009 | | | |

Red Button Design, 'ROSS', Water Transport, Sanitation and Storage System
- human powered water purification system for rural Africa
Final Decision Maker: Procurement officers of Non Government Organisations, Charities or Aid Organisations.
ROSS is a 3-in-1,household level, water transport, sanitation and storage solution for use inthe developing world.ROSS allows its users tocomfortably transport large volumes of water from the nearest available source, sanitise this water for drinking and bathing use, and then safely store itwithin the home. This can remove, in many cases, the need to independentlyprocure solutions to these 3 key issues easing the burden of administration, warehousing, distribution, deployment and both aid worker and end usertraining. In addition, ROSS sanitises water in a single step without theneed for heat treating, UV or chemicals and using no external powersource, giving it a degree of logistical independence from supply chains, anessential advantage in areas of political, social or meteorological disruption. It is suitable forboth relief, in the case of contaminated or disrupted water supply and, forthose without a local source of safe water, as a life saving everyday applianceuntil a sustainable water infrastructure can be established. It was designed anddeveloped from concept stage by internationally award winning design companyRed Button Design, with the input of charities, non-government organisationsand non-profits working in the field, as well as major organisations suchas the International Federation of the Red Cross, The World HealthOrganisation and The United Nations family, thus ensuring it is bothfit-for-purpose and in line with current policy recommendations on theprovision of drinking water. The user would push theunit to the nearest source of water, fill the 50 litre tank and roll the unitback to their community. ROSS uses a patented method to translate the rotationof the wheels into energy sufficient to drive a pump and filter configurationheld securely within the tank, sanitising water 'on-the-go' so that once theuser has returned to the community the water dispensed is safe to drink or canbe safely stored within the unit for later use. The unit's large volumewill reduce by 2/3rds the number of journeys needed for one individual tosupply her family with safe water. Accounting for the reduction injourneys taken and reduced distance traveled to the nearest watersource (vs nearest approved, safe source) ROSS could reduce the distanceshe walks by >30km per day.

Inventor Commentary & Alternative Development Scenarios

ROSS purifies collected water to safe drinking standards "on-the-go" as the unit is pushed along, by using the rotation of the wheels to drive a filtration system within the tank. |
Inventor(s) Commentary: We see this product moving away from the stigmatised image of donated 'foreign aid' & becoming an aspirational product able to be branded with advertisements or logos facilitating new brand awareness for multinational corporations in emerging markets. To date, we have received requests for in excess of 45,000 units which we require investment to satisfy and, moving forward, we have a further product approaching proof of concept stage as well as a portfolio of early stage product concepts. |
